A POOR OUTING FOR THE CATALANS
On This Day In 2007, 19-year-old Lionel Messi scored one of the best goals in Spanish football history as Barcelona beat Getafe 5-2 in the Copa del Rey semi-final. The goal was remarkably similar to Diego Maradona’s goal in the quarter-finals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup, known as “Goal of the Century”. The Argentine international collected the ball on the right side near the halfway line, ran 60 metres(66 yards), and beat five defenders before scoring with an angled finish, just as Maradona had done. Despite Barcelona’s poor outing(Barcelona finished the season with one trophy, Supercopa de España), Messi finished the 2006/2007 season with 17 goals in 36 games. This also marks both the last season FC Barcelona wore a jersey without a sponsor and the first time a sponsor appeared in it: UNICEF (this was a non-commercial agreement).
