Aston Villa Set To Scramble For New Players

Dean Smith, Manager of Aston Villa looks on prior to the Premier League match between Aston Villa and Watford FC at Villa Park on January 21, 2020

English Premier League club Aston Villa could be in a for a huge summer of spending – report says.

The Dean Smith’s side forked out £120m on new players last summer and now they could spend another £100m on a handful of average players. It appears that despite rather wasting their money on only finishing 17th, they haven’t learned their lesson – that’s unless they sign proven players.

Villa’s transfer window is expected to be a busy one. They’ve been linked with cheaper moves for the likes of Fabio Borini but there are more eye-catching moves touted for individuals like Brentford midfielder Said Benrahma and Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard.

It’s believed the latter could cost somewhere in the region of £40m, so the Villans would have to break their transfer record if they see him as a genuine target.

However, £15m below that value is a player in the Championship, someone that missed out on Premier League life at the very final hurdle. Coincidentally, it could also be a reunion for Smith.

Brentford’s Ollie Watkins scored 26 goals in all competitions last season

Villa are also believed to be interested in signing Brentford striker Oliver Watkins who scored 26 goals in all competitions last season. The 24-year-old might also be interested to join Villa as his club Brentford failed to earn a promotion to the English top-flight after losing 1-2 to Fulham in the playoffs final.
