His career began in 1989 as a youth player for local hometown club FC Conti de Boulogne-sur-Mer. He left the club after seven years to join professional outfit Lille, but departed the club after three years after having difficulties adjusting. In 1999, he joined US Boulogne and made his professional debut for the club a year later.

He spent two years(2005-2007) with Olympique Marseille where he scored 18 goals in 90 games.

He joined Bayern Munich in June 2007 for a then club-record fee of €25 million. In 12 years with the Bavarians, he scored 124 goals in 425 games. He also won 22 trophies during his time with the German side.

He also played for the likes of Alès, Metz, Brest and Galatasaray.

He represented France between 2006 to 2014, netting 16 goals in 81 caps. He was a member of Les Bleus squad that finished as runners-up at the 2006 World Cup. He also represented France at the 2008, 2012 European Championships and 2010 , 2014 World Cups. He retired from international football in August 2014.

The winger currently plays for Fiorentina in the Italian Serie A.
