LIONEL MESSI: The First of Many

On This Day In 2005, Argentine forward Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccittini became the youngest-ever goal scorer(17 years and 331 days old) in FC Barcelona’s history when he came on as an 88th minute substitute for Samuel Eto’o Fils to score his first professional goal for the club in a 2-0 La Liga win over Albacete Balompié. Messi’s goal which was scored in the 90th minute was assisted by Ronaldinho. Prior to the goal, Ronaldinho had earlier assisted Messi for a goal which was ruled as offside.

This was Messi’s first appearance for the club’s first-team since November 2003 versus FC Porto(his first unofficial game for the club). Messi finished the 2004/2005 season with one goal in nine games. Now 32, Messi is the Catalans all-time leading goalscorer with 627 in 718 games. He is also the club’s captain.
