RONALDO: The Old Trafford Salute

On This Day In 2003, 26-year-old Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid lost 3-4 to Manchester United in a UEFA Champions League quarterfinal second leg match played at Old Trafford. Ronaldo was substituted in the 67th minutes for Santiago Hernan Solari and was given a standing ovation from both sets of fans.

Reflecting on the ovation given to him from the opposition’s fans, Ronaldo stated, “For me it remains a very beautiful, very special moment. Despite there famous win at Old Trafford, the Red Devils were still knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals, 6-5 on aggregate(Madrid won the first-leg 3-1), by the Galácticos.

Madrid who were the defending champions reached the semi-final of the competition where they eventually lost to Italian giants Juventus.
