On This Day In 1988, Southampton striker Alan Shearer became the youngest player in history to score a hat-trick in England’s top division, when he netted three goals in a 4-2 win over Arsenal the Dell. At 17 years and 240 days old, Shearer smashed the previous record set by Jimmy Greaves in August 1957(for Chelsea vs Tottenham). Shearer ended the 1987–88 season with three goals in five games, and was rewarded with his first professional contract. Shearer represented the Saints(a nickname for Southampton) between 1988 to 1992, netting 43 goals in 158 games.
