THE POTTERS’ ELIMINATION
On This Day In 2018, a Paul Lambert led Stoke City were relegated to the English Championship(with one game to spare) after a 1-2 loss to Crystal Palace at the Bet365 Stadium. No thanks to goals from James McArthur and Patrick van Aanholt which cancelled out Xherdan Shaqiri’s opener. This was Stoke’s first relegation of any kind since they dropped out of the second tier in 1997/1998 season along with Reading and Manchester City. Also, it was also their first top-flight relegation since 1985. In the same vein, Crystal Palace became the first team to avoid relegation from the English top-flight despite losing their opening seven league games since Liverpool in 1899/1900 season.
Despite the acquisition of seven new players(two on loan), the Potters finished 19th at end of the 2017/2018 season, three points from safety, ending their ten-year spell in the Premier League. Stoke City are yet to return to the Premier League since then.
