VAN PERSIE: The Dutchman’s Old Trafford Experience
On This Day In 2013, 29-year-old Manchester United striker Robin van Persie scored a first-half hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Aston Villa, confirming United’s 20th league title with four games to spare. It was the fourth time in the history of the competition that the Premier League title was decided at Old Trafford, more than at any other ground.
Supporters of Manchester United voted Van Persie as the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for the 2012–13 season. The Dutchman was also nominated by UEFA into the 10-man shortlist for the 2012–13 Best Player in Europe award. Van Persie who won the Premier League Golden Boot for the second consecutive time finished the 2012/2013 season with 26 league goals and 30 goals in all competitions. His three goals against Villa was the first of his two hat-tricks for the Red Devils.
To date, the Dutchman remains the last player to score a hat-trick for Manchester United in the Premier League.
